This is one of a number of animal portraits which I started late last year. I generally put them up on my easel whenever I feel a need to take a break from the seascapes, etc. For this piece I’ve used a palette of Van Dyke Brown, Naples Yellow, Paynes Gray,  Davy’s Gray and Zinc White. There’s still alot of highlighting and shading to be done but it’s taking shape.

My aim for this compact piece was to capture the light and form of the cliff face on a grey and overcast day. Some detail work to do yet.

I was attracted to this scene by the strong and dramatic backlighting which created a striking view. I worked on the highlights of the water and cliffs today. I’m going to leave this one for a few days to dry before making a few minor adjustments. Almost finished…
